South Bend is a large city in and the county seat of St. Joseph County, Indiana. It lies near the southernmost bend of the St. Joseph river, hence the name. The population according to the 2010 census was just over 100,000, with over 300,000 in the metro statistical area, South Bend is the fourth largest city in the state. The area where the city now lies was originally settled in the 19th century by fur traders, though for hundreds of years before them Native Americans lived in the area, and the first buildings were established in the 1860’s. The St. Joseph River was largely responsible for establishing South Bend’s economy during the mid 20th century, the river access made heavy industrial development possible, which spurred job growth.
In 1960 the city's population peaked at over 130,000 residents, but when the heavy industry slowed during this period there was a population decline. Honeywell, AM General and Crowe are the last heavy industrial companies left in the city, and the biggest employment industries are now health care, education, small business, and tourism.
